Christmas in the City

Cairns Regional Council looks set to support a Christmas promotion for the CBD at the Planning and Development Committee meeting in council chambers tomorrow.

“Christmas in the City” is a Cairns Post campaign that will provide marketing support to businesses in the city while celebrating the festive season and encouraging visitation to the revamped CBD.

Cairns Regional Councillor for the city and inner suburbs Richie Bates was in praise of the promotion saying, “I commend the Cairns Post for this initiative that will bring the spirit of Christmas into our CBD”

“This proposal is a welcome boost for traders and will be a great enticement for those wishing to celebrate the Christmas season in the City Heart”

“In recent years the festive focus has mainly been in the Lagoon and Esplanade area with the Christmas tree and events such as Carols by Candlelight”

“While these draw-cards will remain, we now also look forward to putting the Christmas spotlight on the CBD with its reinvigorated street-scapes and accessibility”

“Council continues to invest significantly in the revitalization of the CBD, so it is important that we back up our infrastructure improvements with complimentary activities that support commerce and visitation – Especially assisting retailers during the first construction phase of Shield Street Heart”

“Cairns Regional Council will be partnering the Cairns Post in this promotion with sponsorship to the value of $10,000 and a commitment to decorate some of our key city infrastructure as part of the event”

“The city has some amazing historic and architectural buildings that will lend themselves perfectly to a Christmas makeover – The Cairns Post building is one such structure that could really bring Christmas alive in Abbott Street”

Cr Bates continued, “Features such Enlightenment at the Cairns Library were a wonderful attraction at this year’s Cairns Festival, being able to offer the same kind of atmosphere during the Christmas period will again be a delight for families”

“Retailers and traders outside of the CBD will also be encouraged to participate with a $10,000 advertising package prize offered to the best dressed business”

CBD Car Park upgrade in Council Plan

Cairns Regional Councillor for the CBD and inner suburbs Richie Bates has confirmed council’s intentions to support a million dollar upgrade of the cities’ Lake Street Car Park.

Cr Bates has flagged a raft of changes for the parking station that include security, lighting and access improvements as well as a shift to 24/7 operation.

Cr Bates said, “Lake Street Car Park has been under-utilized for some time, refurbishing this infrastructure will take its operation and standard into the 21st Century”

“At present the facility has limited hours of entry, moving to 24/7 access will support greater use and free up more parking on the surrounding streets”

“That’s good for the local businesses and people who visit the area”

“With Lake Street Car Park working under capacity parking opportunities do exist in our city, but we need to encourage drivers to use these bays and create an efficient and accessible destination”

“In addition, we will seek to improve standards of security in the building with better lighting and CCTV surveillance”

“It is vital for the life of the city that we fully exploit the use of the Lake Street Car Park and ensure this transport infrastructure does not become dormant”

“People need to know that they can use the car park anytime and feel safe in using it”

Cr Bates also suggested the possibility of installing electronic signage to inform motorists of available spaces, “Advisory boards notifying motorists of parking vacancies on the arterial routes into the CBD is another good way of maximizing use of the block, while reducing the time it takes to find a space”

“Good transport infrastructure and planning brings economic benefits as well as enhancing lifestyle – developing a diverse transport strategy that caters for public, active and private modes is essential for the future of Cairns”
